The the latest release of iOS 18.2 finally brings many of the promised features of Apple Intelligence, such as Genmoji and Photo Gallery. One long-awaited tool is Visual Intelligencefeatures currently reserved for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max that were first introduced on company event September.
Visual Intelligence is Apple’s answer to Google Lens. It supports the camera system and AI to analyze images in real time and provide useful information. This can help people learn more about the world around them and is very useful when shopping, looking up information about a restaurant or business, translating text, summarizing words or reading aloud. It can also integrate with Google Image Search and ChatGPT.
There are two caveats. The release of Apple Intelligence has been disruptive, and that continues with Visual Intelligence. Currently, these devices work with the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, which are the best of the company’s latest smartphones. Apple has indicated that the feature may be available for older models. Google Lens, after all, has been around since 2017which was when the Pixel 2 was the hottest phone on the block.
There is also a waiting list, which is true of all Apple Intelligence products. To join the list, go to settings and look for “Apple Intelligence & Siri.” Then click “Join Waitlist.” Once approved, the program will be ready for use.
As of this writing, the only way to activate Visual Intelligence is to long press the Camera Control button. It’s the new control panel on the bottom right of the mobile phone. When you press it, the Visual Intelligence feature will open.
Now the fun begins. Just point your phone at an object and select ChatGPT, via the top left icon, or Google Image Search, via the top right icon. Alternatively, if the viewing area has text, click the circle at the bottom of the screen. The phone can also point to a business for useful information.
Move the phone in front of the text, activate Visual Intelligence and tap the circle at the bottom of the screen. This will analyze the text. When it comes to analysis, there are several options. Click “Translate” at the bottom of the screen to translate the text into another language. Tap “Read Aloud” if you want the text to be read aloud by Siri. Click “Summary” for a quick summary.
The tool will also identify text messages, such as phone numbers, email addresses and websites. Users can take actions based on text type. For example, click on a phone number to call. Other actions include starting an email, creating a calendar event or visiting a website. Click the “More” button to see all the available options. Click “Open” or scroll up to complete the session.
Visual Intelligence can provide you with information about the business in front of you. Just open the device and point the camera in front of the symbol. The business name should appear at the top of the screen. Click “Schedule” to view hours of operation or click “Order” to purchase something. Check the available menu or services by clicking “Menu” and save by touching “Save.” To call the business, read reviews or view the website, click “More.”
Scroll up or click “Close” to end the session. This service is available to US customers only.
Start by pointing the camera at an object. Launch Visual Intelligence and click the ChatGPT icon in the top left corner of the screen. Click the “Ask” button to learn more about the product. We used it on a bottle of hand cream, which was well known. After that, a text field will appear for follow-up questions. Users can ask whatever they want, but the results may vary. We asked ChatGPT where to buy hand cream and how much it costs. It performed admirably on this task. No purchase.
Click the “Close” button or scroll up to remove all sections, which will also close Visual Intelligence.
Selecting Google Image Search will bring up a Safari dialog box with similar images pulled from the web. The best way to use it here is to find contracts. We took a picture of a hand cream bottle and the Safari results had many different types of trees to choose from. However, users should find the best deal and complete the purchase themselves.
Click the “Open” button to remove the result and swipe up from the bottom of the screen to close the tool.
