Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire has explained that Ruben Amorim’s adjustment “will always be difficult” due to the dramatically different style of play he is trying to introduce.
Amorim is set on Erik ten Haagpermanent successor in early November. The former Sporting CP head coach did not take charge of his first competitive game until the end of the move after being sacked in Lisbon. In this period of many games and little training, the 39-year-old developed a new formation and defensive approach.
Through his opening ten games at the helmAmorim suffered a record five defeats – the worst start by any United boss since the Second World War. Maguire has watched this dismal run of results from the bench and from the heart of defence, including a current run of three straight defeats, and attributes it to such a drastic change in style.
“It’s about managers and styles, it’s not like they’ve come in and have similar styles,” Maguire said Sky Sports when we compare Amorim with Ten Hag, who did not operate with a back three or try to press as high up the field. “They are the total opposite in terms of what they want and what they are looking for.
“So the transition period will be difficult. We all have a lot of faith in the manager and his entire coaching staff. I’m sure things will turn around. He knows exactly what he needs to do to bring this club back. He came in and did everything he needed to do. He is really demanding.”
After Amorim’s debut in Manchester United – an unconvincing score 1-1 with newly promoted Ipswich Town – the Portuguese boss claimed his players were “thinking too much”. That tentative display, fueled by information overload, permeated Amorim’s short, and so far unsuccessful, reign.
Despite offering an explanation, Maguire he didn’t make any excuses. “We’re just doing everything we can to climb the ladder,” the centre-back said. “At the moment we can’t set a target because we are nowhere near good enough and nowhere near where we want to be in the league table.
“It’s really disappointing what we’ve done so far. Everyone knows that. We know it’s not good enough for this club.”
