Why the Liverpool boss is not fooled by their impressive away form

Arne Slot refuses to get carried away with Liverpool’s away form because he thinks the toughest games are yet to come.

Liverpool are unbeaten on the road this season in all competitions and have a seven-point lead in the Premier League, although Arsenal could cut that to six with victory over Ipswich tonight.

The Reds have so far avoided defeat against Manchester United, Arsenal, Newcastle and Tottenham, but Slott believes that is partly down to a good fixture list.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s trip to West Ham, he said: “I think our form away from home has been good, but maybe that has to do with the teams you face in the first half of the season.

“So I think we’ve mostly faced teams in the top half of the table at home, and the others we’ve faced away from home, so that might have something to do with it. We are strong both away and at home.

“I don’t see any reason why we are stronger there than here (at Anfield), (it’s) something we can best assess at the end of the season when we have played each team at home and away, to see what suits us best. But I think we are we are a team that is difficult to beat away from home as well as in home games.”

Always under pressure in Liverpool – Slot

Liverpool have paved the way this season but Slott insists he is not putting more pressure on his players now they are the team to beat.

“No, you’re sitting in front of the Liverpool manager; So there is always pressure in this club, if you are one, two, three, four or five in the table,” he added.

“If you work at a big club like Liverpool, there is always pressure. I think they were number one last season halfway through the season too? I think they were last season. So it is not so strange that a club like us is at the top of the league. But we know how many good teams there are in this league and they can also win almost every game.

“There’s no added pressure – there’s always pressure if you work at a club like Liverpool.”

At the end he greets captain Van Dijk

Liverpool will be without the suspended Dominik Szoboszlai at the London Stadium, but Virgil van Dijk is expected to lead the team.

The Netherlands international is out of contract at the end of the season – along with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold – and Slot is a big fan of his countryman.

He said: “He was a great player, such a great player for Liverpool for so many years. Unfortunately for him, he was sidelined with an injury for most of the season; it didn’t help this football club at all, so that probably tells you how much influence he had here at this club.

“I can only tell you what my experiences with him have been and he has been not only because of what you see – because you see him during the game and he is outstanding during the game – but he has such a big impact in training as well.

“He is a vocal leader of this team, every time we start practice he is above his teammates and leads by example. So for me he has been outstanding so far and we can only hope that he can continue to show that during games and in training for as long as he is with us.”
