Lawyers representing President-elect Donald Trump have asked the Supreme Court to temporarily halt a law that would force TikTok owner ByteDance to sell the short-form video app or see it banned in the United States.
If the software is not sold, the ban will go into effect in a few weeks, on January 19. ByteDance argues that the law is inconsistent with the law – known as the Protecting Americas from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act – by the Supreme Court. He is scheduled to hear arguments on January 10.
In new bookingTrump’s lawyers describe the deadline for the ban or sale, which comes one day before his inauguration, as a “disastrous moment” that interferes with “his ability to manage the national policy of the United States.”
The write-up did not specify what course Trump would take in this matter, but said that “he is the only one with the technical expertise, electoral responsibility, and political will to negotiate a decision to save the tower while talking about national security and the Government.”
The writing also shows that he currently has 14.7 million followers on TikTok, “allowing him to analyze the importance of TikTok as a unique way to express freedom of expression, including political speech.”
Supporters of the law say TikTok poses a national security threat because the Chinese government can use it to collect data and push propaganda to US viewers. When Trump tried to ban TikTok during his first term as president, he said expressed support for the program in the near future. During his presidential campaign, he posted on Social Truth, “TO ALL WHO WANT TO KILL TIK TOK IN AMERICA, VOTE TRUMP!”
Several civil rights groups and free speech groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic Frontier, are involved. wrote their summary supporting TikTok’s petition and arguing that “the government has not provided credible evidence that TikTok is being harmed.”
