President-elect Donald Trump has asked Supreme Court delaying the law that would ban TikTok until it is enacted. In an amicus brief, Trump lawyer D. John Sauer wrote that the future president wants a chance to find a solution to the problem “through politics.”
The law to ban or sell TikTok is set to go into effect January 19, 2025just one day before Trump’s inauguration. The summary calls the ban date “unfortunately timely” and says the incoming president should have more time to work with TikTok. TikTok’s legal team cited the same concern in a request to delay the ban. The brief also mentions Trump’s past “actions” and his Truth Social TV platform.
“Only President Trump has the technical expertise, electoral clout, and political will to negotiate to save the platform while addressing the national security concerns the administration has voiced — concerns that President Trump has acknowledged,” wrote Sauer.
Trump’s views on TikTok are very different from those he took during his first term, where he was followed the cancellation of the program in 2020. He also floated the idea that Microsoft “could do a deal, a reasonable deal, so the United States Treasury gets a lot of money” without explaining exactly how such a deal would work.
President Trump changed his mind on the TikTok ban during his second campaign. He said CNBC images Squawk box in March that banning TikTok “would make Facebook bigger and I see Facebook as an enemy of the people, and of the mass media.”
The Supreme Court is due to hear the ban on the project on January 10.
