Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points with a game in hand after a convincing 3-1 win over Leicester City on Boxing Day.
The Reds received a significant boost ahead of kick-off as both Manchester City and Chelsea dropped points earlier in the day—City drew with Everton and Chelsea suffered a 2-1 defeat by Fulham at Stamford Bridge. This gave Arne Slot’s team the perfect opportunity to consolidate their position at the top and they got the job done.
Leicester City took a surprisingly early lead at a foggy Anfield, with Jordan Ayew hitting the net inside the first 10 minutes. But Liverpool quickly took control of the game, creating a number of chances and hitting the post twice in the first half.
The equalizer came in first half stoppage time when Cody Gakpo produced a brilliant moment. He picked up the ball on the left flank, cut into a defender and executed a trademark, curling shot into the top right corner for a 1-1 breakaway.
Liverpool continued the second half with relentless pressure, needing just four minutes to take the lead. Curtis Jones calmly scored from close range after being set up by Alexis Mac Allister to put the Reds 2-1 up.
Cody Gakpo appeared to score a third soon after, but a lengthy VAR review ruled out the goal. However, the result was sealed in the 82nd minute when Mohamed Salah secured all three points for Liverpool with a sensational shot from a tight corner.
Salah’s goal capped another outstanding individual performance, taking his Premier League tally this season to 16 goals and 11 assists in just 17 appearances—an incredible 27 goals. In all competitions, the 32-year-old now has 19 goals and 15 assists in 25 games. (Portable market)
After the game, he was again asked about updates on his future, and while he had previously made public statements about his contract situation twice before, he chose to remain tight-lipped this time.
He simply said (quote over Express): “I wish the fans a happy New Year and see you at the next home game,”
He existed regarding reports on his future at the club last month, but recent reports indicate that the club is near the announcement of a new two-year contract with the player.
Fans are increasingly concerned about his future, while his contributions this season highlight his continued importance to the team. Liverpool will not get a replacement for these numbers and if they do end up allowing him to leave, it will surely result in a huge backlash from the fans.
