Eyes are good: I have two. I also like spoons. But if you want a regular coffee for a good espresso or pour-over, the right scale is the most difficult way.
I still remember the time when to weigh my coffee beans every morning, I would place a small cup on top of the digital scale, then press a button on the scale, and wait a minute or so for the scale display to appear. zero before pouring the coffee beans into the dosing cup. Back in the sands of time – October of 2024, I think it was – I didn’t see this as disturbing. That’s how coffee beans work.
But maybe they don’t need to. Over the past few years, several coffee brands have adopted the simple idea that the dosing cup and scale can be combined into one device. Light bulbs above the forehead, and bluebirds on the shoulders. Perhaps the most beautiful of these is Subscale, the latest from Singaporean coffee brand Subminimal (which also produces we like milk fther).
The Subscale is a black-on-black cup holder that can hold about 60 grams of coffee, and the base has a scale accurate to one-tenth of a gram. Ever since I got it, this device hasn’t left my computer – and it’s made me enjoy my morning coffee ritual a little more.
The key to Subscale’s appeal is its simplicity. The world of professional coffee is now full of innovation and complexity and sometimes confusion. Once a cutting tool, the coffee scale has become a household item for all types of coffee. The Fellow Tally Pro (8/10, WIRED Recommends) will do the math for you, and calculate the recommended water weights for the perfect match for your sprayer. Bluetooth-enabled Acaia Pearl S it will monitor your shower time and water pressure, while playing music on the side.
The subscale does none of these things.
It’s a cup. It is a light, transparent cup with a feather-grip scale on the bottom that measures the weight of its contents. No Bluetooth, no app, and no learning curve. It takes up very little space on my counter, and looks great there.
