South Korea’s Parliament voted to impeach acting President Han Duck-soo, temporarily removing him from power less than two weeks after the same body. voted for impeachment President Yoon Suk Yeol after his writing declaration of martial law which led the country to a political crisis.
The vote was approved 192-0, The Associated Press reported.
Han’s duties and powers have been removed until the Constitutional Court makes a decision on whether to reinstate him as president or remove him entirely. The court usually has nine judges on the bench, but because of delays in filling vacancies, it has six judges. For the full removal of Han, all six would have to vote yes. according to CNN.
The same court is also looking into Yoon’s impeachment. In total, the court has up to half a year to hear the cases and make a decision.
he he said he respects the lawmaker’s decision and “I will suspend my duties under relevant laws to avoid further confusion and uncertainty.”
Choi Sang-mok, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, occupies and assumes the duties.
The impeachment motion was brought by the Democratic Party, the main opposition party, over Han’s refusal to continue filling the three vacant seats on the country’s highest court.
Yoon was ousted on December 14, less than two weeks after briefly declaring martial law in the East Asian country on December 3.
Yoon’s statement in early December drew fierce criticism in the National Assembly and led to protests outside the building’s lobbies. He ended up apologizing for the decision and said he wouldn’t do it again.
