Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran will miss three games after a failed appeal to have his red card overturned in Newcastle.
The 21-year-old Colombia international was sent off by referee Anthony Taylor 32 minutes into Boxing Day’s 3-0 defeat at St James’ Park after appearing to tread on defender Fabian Schar, sparking a furious reaction from head coach Unai Emery, who later hinted that the club will appeal.
However, their bid proved unsuccessful and Duran will now serve a three-match ban for violent conduct.
A statement on Villa’s official X account read: “Aston Villa can confirm that our decision to appeal against Jhon Duran’s red card in our game against Newcastle United has been rejected. The player will now miss our next three games.”
Emery insisted after the game that it was not a red card offence, adding: “I don’t think he kicked him on purpose. Of course we will appeal and we hope it won’t be three games because that is a very big punishment for this procedure.”
The striker will sit out the Premier League games against Brighton and Leicester at the turn of the year, as well as the FA Cup third round tie with West Ham on January 10.
