“When we play in India, we expect good support for us”

MS Dhoni and his fans share a common love for each other and this is something that has been documented over the years together. However, there was a time when he called out fans for a lack of support. The incident dates back to 2006 when England were touring India.

In the third Test against England in 2006, Dhoni hinted that he heard fans booing the home team at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This was a time when the team was not at its best and lost the Mumbai Test, allowing the English to come back in the Test series.

MS Dhoni, who was in Delhi for an event after the first ODI in the city, said the crowd did not get behind the team and “didn’t get enough support.”

“We don’t get the support we want from our fans, especially when things aren’t going well for us. I can understand if we play abroad, the support there will be less. When we play in India, we expect good support for us. I don’t want to be specific, but you know what happened in Mumbai and here (in the first ODI in Delhi), said Dhoni at a function held in Delhi to congratulate him via EsPNCricinfo.

India, who drew the three-match Test series 1-1, won the seven-match ODI series 5-1. Yuvraj Singh, who celebrates his birthday today, was awarded the player of the series for his contribution.

MS Dhoni later captained India in all three formats

In 2007, MS Dhoni was appointed the captain of the Indian white ball team and in 2008 he was given the duty of the white ball captain. Under his leadership, the Indian team won the inaugural Men’s T20I World Cup in 2007, the ODI Men’s World Over-28 Cup in 2011 and the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy in 2013.

Dhoni later announced his retirement from Test cricket in 2014 and handed over the white-ball captaincy to Virat Kohli in 2017. He continued to play as a wicket-keeper and announced his retirement on 15 August 2020 in the semi-final against New Zealand. The ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2019 is his last.

MS Dhoni is still an active player and will be in action in the upcoming Indian Premier League season. Fans will be anxiously waiting to catch a glimpse of their beloved player when he steps up to bat.
