How so?
One example is early vampires from the Balkans and Slavs generally did not drink blood. They killed people who were killed or committed adultery to death. If he drank blood, it usually came from the chest. It was this tale of passion and love. It looked like, well, pretty good looking poetry.
But then I was thinking about where the fairy tales come from. They are people who are suffering from sleeping sickness, where they are suddenly dreaming because of the vampiric coming. They have this on their chest. It’s also grounded in reality, although piercing the sternum with vampire teeth is funny. So it was interesting to explore those kinds of things that would make it fresh, but also feel like it could be integrated into this world.
Did most of the film take place in the aftermath?
I mean there’s a ton of CG in the movie, but you try to do big crazy things that are done with real CG. That way you can use CG to fix things and enhance things, and you’re less aware of handshakes because you’re not looking at things that look fake, because things that are usually fake are real.
I ask because, I work at WIRED, I think about AI more. With filmmaking, there’s a lot of talk about “AI can do this, AI can do that,” but I look at your movies and I don’t think AI can do that. What do you think about these things?
Guillermo del Toro’s quote that the greatest achievement of AI is making “semi-compelling screensavers” is justice. AI, I think, is best used to empower people to do more human things. So that’s all I have to say about it.
I know it’s late, but I have to ask: What monsters will you face?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
I mean, I’d love to see a Robert Eggers Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
Maybe I should stop that joke, because it might go nowhere.
I mean, you already have it SpongeBob in the media recently.
