Beards grow about a millimeter every two to three days, depending on your condition—one-eighth of an inch a week, on average. So experimenting with beard trimmers can take a long time.
In general, we test each beard trimmer when the beard is long enough to be trimmed properly, using two cutting lengths. Weight and balance are important, as is the ability of the blade to reach difficult areas around the neck. Our testers look at how well-designed and easy-to-use stickers are, and we verify manufacturers’ claims about battery life and power. We also check with professional hairdressers, especially to verify the claims of strength and reliability between brands and brands.

Here are some tips to help you choose the right shape for your face.
- Ceramic versus metal: Ceramic blades can be sharper than metal, but the small teeth of beard trimmers are made of stainless steel.
- Barrel control: Some beard trimmers have built-in controls. For an easier life, choose one with fewer connections.
- Ni-MH vs. Li-ion: Avoid clippers that have very long battery life and that use old nickel-metal-hydride batteries. They don’t hold their charge as long as lithium-ion.
- Waterproof? Shaving in the shower isn’t as beneficial as wet shaving, but the waterproof design allows you to rinse your trimmer under the tap with confidence.
- To import USB: It took a long time, but you can get USB cables for beards, while Manscaped uses USB-C on the shell itself. A great bonus for travel.
- Small versus big teeth: Larger blade teeth can cut thicker, thicker hair, but smaller teeth allow for a closer and more precise cut. The latter is best illustrated by the Philips OneBlade family.
- Wide vs narrow page: Hair clippers have larger blades than beard clippers. The shorter version offers more control, and less time wasted for those with short facial hair.
- Do pages need to be updated? Use vegetable oil (often included) to prevent rust, and the vegetables should last for years. Trimmer-shaver hybrid Philips OneBlade models will need frequent replacement, however.
- Vacuum? Some barbers have a vacuum, to prevent any shaving. Honestly, it’s a bit of a gimmick.
