Writing for his column in the Sydney Morning Herald, Greg Chappell revealed the reason why Travis Head was successful against Jasprit Bumrah while other batsmen struggled. Chappell claimed that Head treated Bumrah like any other bowler and played him with intent which also disrupted Bumrah’s rhythm.
“(Travis) Head’s performances against Jasprit Bumrah in this series are an example of his fearless approach. While most batsmen struggle to survive Bumrah’s unorthodox action, blistering pace and relentless accuracy, Head treated him like any other bowler,” Chappell wrote.
“By playing with intent and trying to score from Bumrah, Head not only nullified his threat but also disrupted his rhythm. His ability to deliver short deliveries with authority and fullers with precision was outstanding, highlighting the strides he made,” he added.
Travis Head has so far scored 409 runs in three Tests at an average of 81.80 with two hundreds and one fifty. Interestingly, he scored all his runs at an incredible strike rate of 94.23.
Although Bumrah has taken 21 wickets in three Tests and troubled almost every Australian batsman so far, he has an average record against Head. The Australian star has scored 83 runs off Bumrah at a strike rate of 91.2 and has been dismissed just twice so far.
Further praising Travis Head, Greg Chappell even called for him to be the next Australian captain after Pat Cummins. He called Head the most improved batsman in all formats in the last three years and even claimed that his aggressive style reflects the Australian style.
“I believe that Travis (Head) has been the best player in world cricket for the last three years, and by becoming that, he has solidified the favoritism to be the next Australian captain. In his current form, Travis exemplifies the Australian way of batting,” remarked the former India chief coach.
Travis Head has played a number of important shots over the past two years. He scored a stunning hundred in the 2023 World Test Cup (WTC) final against India and led Australia to a memorable title win. Head scored a fiery 163 off 174 balls in the final and also won the man of the match award.
The left-hander did not stop there and scored a brilliant hundred in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023, also against India. He scored 137 off 120 balls in the summit clash and hit 15 fours and 4 sixes to guide Australia to victory over the home favourites.
