Why, 2024 was the year I became interested in achieving Completionist ++ on Balatro?

I received the Completionist Steam achievement, which you get for identifying every card in the game, after a month of playing. It took me another five months to get the Completionist+, awarded to those who beat Ante 8 with every deck in the gold challenge. One thing left for me to do was the hardest part of the game: Competitionist++, which involves getting gold stickers for each joke by beating Ante 8 at the gold difficulty each of them is working on.

As of writing, Completionist++ is still a distant dream. It’s easy to feel like you’ve mastered the game after beating Completionist+; There are simple combinations of humor that will get you through Ante 8 with any deck. Completionist++ strips you of that safety net, and forces you to succeed at the hardest levels of the game without relying on guaranteed strategies. While sometimes I miss chasing my early days and BalatroThis challenge has given the game new energy for me, as I figure out how to make a success of the comedians that I consider useless.

Balatro is a deep, challenging game for bad guys like me

But one of the great joys of Balatro is that you can go on a bender and play it for hours, then not come back for days or weeks, then just pick it up and move on. You will never lose any skills or lose sight of your goals. It’s a casual, pick-up-and-play game that also hides incredible depth, and games like that don’t come around very often.

Balatro is an excellent port of call

2024 is undoubtedly the year of Balatro. It just came flooding into our heads with dreams of frozen water and the famous Jimbos.
