No game this year has caught the attention of the Engadget team like Balatro they did, and when it came time for everyone involved to do it your favorite sports of 2024everyone – and I mean everyone – wanted to write Balatro. In the end, instead of forcing everyone to fight for the chance to write about their love for the game, we instead decided to ask the community to write what they wanted. Balatro.
Mrs Steam Deck and a Balatro machine at this point, and no, I’m not complaining about it. I have released my Steam Deck for many games in the past Balatro and I plan to play more in the future, but for now and until my last breath, his main work is comedy.
First, Balatro it just feels better on a mobile device. It’s the kind of game you can play quietly while watching TV or listening to a podcast, or more seriously while trying to collect jokes, scores, achievements and stickers by going to Completionist++. The Steam Deck is the perfect platform for this type of game, because, especially in combination with the exciting PC installation, it allows players to move between the two areas without losing progress. The mobile version of Balatro is rad and the Switch version is peachy, but I started playing it on PC and, after over 500 hours, I don’t want to start over on any other platform.
I really like to curl up on the sofa and Balatroplaying it on my desk PC, using it as a distraction on long commutes, and getting in a few hands before bed. The Balatro The system – uh, I mean, Steam Deck – supports my obsession in a seamless way.

Balatro it’s a game you play a lot in your head. There are many modifier cards, each with its own effects and effects, and you use permutations if you’re playing with chemistry tools. It’s a game of choices, it all depends on what you’ve already done. Some jobs, lots of them explode before your eyes.
This is what it does Balatro connections, but I don’t like what I like. What I like the most is how it handles. How it makes digital card games have any problem. It is small tck and shake each card as it scores. The donkey when the joke increases your multiplier, as it is donkeys hurry up and level up as buffs and triggers stack up. The trrp about deck changes. A little delay in opening the motivational pack to increase the prospect, the way the pack breaks down to emphasize the end of your idea. The sound of money colliding when you collect interest or buy something. The fire that burns and rises around your score as you pass the goal in one hand, a dopamine hit within a dopamine hit. How to breathe in trance music when you fail without fail.
You are not human Balatro. It’s just you, you’re looking for cards that match the colors of the circle. However, all of this goes a long way to suck you into a vortex, to lock you in it, perhaps giving a game that is very similar to video poker to have a real place. Balatro it is, in many respects, an A-1 model of financial structure. The easiest way to slow it down is to play it silently.

I’m not a bounty hunter – I’m someone who skips the parts that don’t interest me and never plays the game again. One of the “Platinumed” games in my PlayStation collection is the PS4 version of Resogunand I have 100 percent exactly zero games on Xbox. Why, 2024 was the year I became interested in achieving Completionist ++ on Balatro?
I received the Completionist Steam achievement, which you get for identifying every card in the game, after a month of playing. It took me another five months to get the Completionist+, awarded to those who beat Ante 8 with every deck in the gold challenge. One thing left for me to do was the hardest part of the game: Competitionist++, which involves getting gold stickers for each joke by beating Ante 8 at the gold difficulty each of them is working on.
As of writing, Completionist++ is still a distant dream. It’s easy to feel like you’ve mastered the game after beating Completionist+; There are simple combinations of humor that will get you through Ante 8 with any deck. Completionist++ strips you of that safety net, and forces you to succeed at the hardest levels of the game without relying on guaranteed strategies. While sometimes I miss chasing my early days and BalatroThis challenge has given the game new energy for me, as I figure out how to make a success of the comedians that I consider useless.
If you’ve gone through all those tools and are wondering what to do next, Completionist++ is definitely the one to install. Just a warning: I’ve played for 460 hours on my PC with Steam Deck, and I’ve only opened 961 of the 1,200 stickers for the game.

Some of my friends and colleagues are taking it Balatro to other wild things. Aaron told me that he has unlocked and completed about 95 percent of the game; Right now I’m sitting at a little over 19 percent. A friend of mine shares a quick video from his walkthrough where he gets hundreds of millions of points in one hand with Jokers that I can’t understand, while my winning hand is at 3 million.
Well, still? This is not offensive; it’s a feature, not a bug. Balatro has managed to become the kind of game you can sink hundreds of hours into if you really want to and get good at it. Or you can do as I do and pack, play for 30 minutes or an hour a few times a week, and come back with more to do when you get the itch.
Don’t get me wrong, I love getting to the point where I’m getting a billion points, but my gaming time is limited and I usually choose to spend it on the PS5. But one of the great joys of Balatro is that you can go on a bender and play it for hours, then not come back for days or weeks, then just pick it up and move on. You will never lose any skills or lose sight of your goals. It’s a casual, pick-up-and-play game that also hides incredible depth, and games like that don’t come around very often.

2024 is undoubtedly the year of Balatro. It just came flooding into our heads with dreams of frozen water and the famous Jimbos. But I think what put it on top was when it was launched on iOS and Android this early. Not only does the mobile version cost $5 less than the desktop version on Steam (or console ports), but there are no annoying ads or other in-game purchases. This includes all crossover boxes (such as those with characters from The Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077 etc.) are large updates are coming it will come out early next year.
On top of that, there is no real difference between mobile and desktop/console. In fact, that’s the main reason the game is such a simple title (especially in terms of graphics). But even so, you’d be surprised how easy it is to mess up. The game starts right away and even though you’re smashing ants while pushing your points deep into science, the system never stops. Add a satisfying interface, support for cloud storage, multiple languages and profiles plus a very different approach that’s great to have, and you have an app that plays well on any device.
In fact, I’d say that foldables like the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 are great gadgets for hunting jokes. Their large displays sound like a good match Balatro not sensitive to jamming, which sometimes happens on older devices with limited exposure. The text is generally easy to read (although sometimes a little too small on smaller devices) and there’s plenty of open space to push things around without getting in your way. I have a small complaint that you can read about in my long article Balatro on beauty on mobile devicesbut I have every confidence that I will get more than my money’s worth in the years to come.
