Van Dijk cuts Liverpool’s four chances after Spurs win

Virgil van Dijk says he doesn’t want to talk about Liverpool’s potential quadruple this season despite the Reds’ impressive first half.

Arne Slott’s side beat Spurs 6-3 on Sunday and are currently top of the Premier League and Champions League table, as well as in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

It has been a strong start to life under Slot, but the Liverpool captain insists he will not get too carried away at this stage of the season.

After the 6-3 win at Tottenham, the Dutchman said: “Are you talking about a quadruple in this case? Well, I think I’ve already answered many times that we don’t think what’s out there in May. We want to be up there in May, but we have seen how difficult it is.

“But listen, we focus on what’s next in front of us and that’s the only thing. I don’t allow myself to be drawn into any conversation about possibly winning a trophy or two, three or four.

“It’s all about being present in every game in front of us. Spurs were there at the moment, tough, but we played a very good game. And the next one is Leicester, which is the only team we have an influence on as well.”

However, Van Dijk, whose current contract at Anfield expires in the summer, is not surprised by a run that has seen them lose just once in all competitions this term.

“No (we didn’t surprise ourselves),” Van Dijk said.

“Yes, obviously, I think we’ve only had one addition to the squad in terms of Federico (Chiesa), and this group of players have been playing together for quite a long time.

“The experience is there, the quality is there, I saw it every day.

“Obviously it’s a surprise when there’s been such a big change with Jurgen (Klopp) being replaced by a new manager, and there will always be question marks, but I still had so much confidence in my team that we could definitely compete at the moment, at least at the top of the Premier League league. So we have to stay consistent.”

On his contract situation at Liverpool, Van Dijk added: “There is no deadline at all.

“I will see what the future holds. I am fully focused on Leicester.”
