There are two types of television programming: the type that millions of people watch and talk about and those that don’t get involved in major cultural conversations. In the latter case, it is not a lack of merit. It’s just that not every major TV series gets fandom.
So you could be forgiven for missing one – if not all – of the best series that debuted last year. After all, with countless networks in different formats (broadcast, cable, streaming, etc.) all looking to get you into the original game, there’s a lot of TV to change. Some of them are worse than others; some of that more the worst. Luckily, we’ve done the heavy lifting for you. Below are our picks for the best TV shows you may have missed in 2024.
Whatever you think After the Flood In other words, you’re wrong—or missing a big part of the story. After a flood leaves the large Yorkshire town of Waterside under water, police officer Jo Marshall (Peaky Blinders‘ Sophie Rundle) is called to a car park, where a body is found trapped in an elevator, possibly drowned. But when authorities learn that an unknown man was killed three days before the flood, Jo will do whatever it takes to get the body’s name in the morgue. When she makes the fatal decision to enter her DNA into the genealogy database, she learns that the man who has only been breathing for the past 72 hours has been dead for years. For Jo, who is just weeks away from giving birth, it’s a race to find the killer before she becomes a mother. And, in doing so, realizing that not everyone – even those close to him – are who or what they say. Good news for watchers: After the Flood has been renewed for a second season.
Peter Capaldi plays opposite Daniel Hegarty, a former detective on the verge of a fascinating career where his legacy may be on the line. When an anonymous tipster provides surprising information that calls into question the verdict in the most high-profile, decades-old case Hegarty has ever worked on, he might think he got it all right the first time. What they didn’t expect was detective June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) who received the same information and started following Hegarty’s trail, which puts the two in serious trouble. The ever-charming Capaldi has found his perfect partner in Jumbo. The second season is already in the works.
Diarra Brickland (Diarra Kilpatrick) is a teacher coming out of a bitter divorce who finally feels like she’s ready to get back into a relationship — or have a little fun on Tinder. What she doesn’t expect to find is Chris (Shannon Wallace), the man she has the chance to fall in love with. When she stops hearing from him after one glorious night together, Diarra insists that he must be missing, because there’s no way he can help her…right? Her closest friends are suspicious, but Diarra sets out to find her husband – and soon finds herself at the mercy of Detroit’s most dangerous gangs. Did we say comedy? Kilpatrick is a force of nature on this BET+ series, which she created and produces (along with Kenya Barris).
We know that Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer isn’t the final word on quality. But it says something Lost Boys & Fairies they have a 100 percent positive rating (based on the reviews of a dozen critics, however). After nearly ten years together, Gabriel (Sion Daniel Young) and Andy (Fra Fee) decide they are ready to part ways. But as they begin to raise their children, Gabe—whose childhood was marked by the trauma of his mother’s death and a troubled relationship with his homophobic father—worries that he may not be able, or even fit, to be a loving parent. . It’s a powerful, poignant reminder that the bonds that bind us can also break us.
Even if you weren’t paying attention in your third grade history class, you probably know the basics of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination at the hands of John Wilkes Booth. But Manhunt it is not about service history; very different. It reveals the lengths to which Lincoln’s best friend and secretary of war Edwin Stanton (Tobias Menzies) went to capture Booth. Series creator Monica Beletsky, who previously served as writer-producer Fargo, Leftovers, Relationshipand Friday Night Lightshe is careful in his approach to detail (which will please any presidential history buff).
Becca (Suranne Jones) and Rosaline (Eve Best) are close sisters who have been separated for years, as time, place, and events have changed both of them. When their mother is found suddenly dead on the Isle of Man, they must come together, even if only for a short time, to identify her body and bring it back to Great Britain, where their father is waiting for her. Although the two sisters are confused about what their mother was doing on the island in the first place, they soon come to learn about the many buried chapters of their mother’s history that brought them to this place. Jones (Gentleman Jack) and Good (Dragon House) They are no better than when they are just two, being sisters, for better or for worse.
Clive Owen joins a long list of actors, from Humphrey Bogart to Tom Wilkinson, to play Dashiell Hammett’s private investigator Sam Spade. In this case, Mr. Spade takes place in the early 1960s, twenty years after the events of The Maltese Riverand Spade has made the decision to retire to the beautiful town of Bozouls in the south of France. But when a group of nuns are brutally murdered at a nearby convent, Spade will have to put on his hat again to solve the case.
It’s the tone that reminds The eldestGemma Burgess Mrs. Jane he also reflects on the life of Lady Jane Gray (Emily Bader) through a certain spiritual lens. Of course, in these translations from 1500s England, there are a lot of twists and turns—which only adds to the silliness. But in his heart, Mrs. Jane it’s about the budding affair between Jane and Lord Guildford Dudley (Edward Bluemel), whom Jane’s mother arranged for her to marry. Sadly, eight episodes is all we’ll get from the series, as Amazon announced it was canceling it after just one good season.
A loser Naveen Andrews gets to use his witticisms in the comedy about the American Dream gone wrong. When what appears to be a promising business opportunity arises, patriarch Pradeep Mahesh (Andrews) moves his family from India to America, where culture shock is their problem. When we meet the family, they have been living in Pittsburgh for two years—and they are telling their story to a federal team (Pete Holmes and Romy Rosemont) from the US Immigration and Naturalization Service, as they are. it is suspected that they may have burned down the house of their stupid neighbors (Megan Hilty and Ethan Suplee). The most surprising thing of all is that the story is based on the real life of creator Vijal Patel.
The small screen has been good for Colin Farrell this year, especially with the success of Penguin. But five months before reprising his role as Oz Cobb, the Oscar-nominated actor turned to neo-noir. Sugar. In the lead crime drama Farrell plays John Sugar, a private investigator who is hired to investigate the disappearance of a long-time Hollywood grandson while battling his own personal demons. If you’ve heard anything about the show, you probably know that there are twists (more than one of them, actually). A second season has already been confirmed.
Sally Wainwright has never been known for making “family goodies” – unless your kids think they’re watching too much. Happy Valley it’s a regular story. But that he is the creative force behind Renegade Nell it makes sense when you watch only the first episode. After being framed for murder, Nell Jackson (Louisa Harland) becomes one of England’s most feared street women. It’s all nonsense, but Nell realizes that the best way to clear her name is to lean into the bad news around her and have a little fun with it. Harland is fun to watch (even if you know there’s no Season 2 on the menu).
