The the fantasy finally ends. Universal took to social media on Monday to give moviegoers everywhere a gift: the first official release Christopher Nolan’s next film. It is called The Odyssey which, yes, it is based on Homer’s poem.
“Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a world-famous fairy tale using the new IMAX cinema technology. The film brings Homer’s original saga to IMAX theaters for the first time and opens everywhere on July 17, 2026.
Written by Homer hundreds of years before Christ. The Odyssey then to follow The Illiad. It follows Odysseus, a Greek hero who makes his way home after the Trojan War. An epic adventure with fantastical creatures, battles, and more, it’s a story that’s been changed in a way that looks like any path in any era. But, from Nolan, you can be sure that this will be a big, believable, and big change. In addition, it is far from the previous rumors about the film, such as the helicopter police or what was reported on this site that was a long-term movie about vampires. Hey, maybe it’s a period movie.
Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o star although there is no word on who is playing. But let’s think for a moment. We think—and this is from my io9 colleague Sabina Graves—that it would make sense to see Matt Damon as Odysseus, Holland as his son Telemachus, Hathaway as Penelope, Theron as Athena, Pattinson as Poseidon (or Cyclops) , Nyong’o as Circe, and Zendaya like Calypso. But, again, pure fantasy.
And the “new IMAX movie technology” the studio is working on? It sounds interesting. But not as fun as Nolan is going to the biggest story of his entire career, and maybe his second Oscar.
The Odysseydirected by Christopher Nolans, opens July 17, 2026.
