What’s coming up Marvel 1943: Rise of the Hydra puts the players in the shoes of Captain America and Black Panther as they become uneasy allies to abandon the Nazis during WWII. If that wasn’t attractive enough for you, the game comes courtesy of Skydance and Amy Hennig, the director and writer on the titles like the first three. Unrecognizable games and The inheritance of Cain list.
Until now, Marvel’s triple-A games were all set, but Hennig spoke to him. Entertainment Weekly about how the game is informed by WWII. As he says, it allowed him and co-writers Marc Bernardin and Todd Stashwick to tell a story in the vein of action movies set at the time. Think of a “boys on a mission” movie where Nazis are killed or beaten, and it looks like you’ll have a pretty good idea of what to expect here. The main goal, according to Hennig, is to give players “the look, feel, and sound (of) watching a big Marvel movie or TV show, but you’re actually running the game.”
Since Marvel 1943 is a “global story,” players will travel to different locations, including Wakanda where they live in Paris and Azzuri’s hometown. In the game, they are isolated from the outside world and protected by an “impenetrable forest,” but Hennig said Wakandans are “drawn” to war. As they have adopted a neutral stance, “the world is shrinking, and they have to protect their interests. (…) You can shoot down planes that might want to fly to Wakanda, but how long can you stay in the shadows?” The question will be examined through the eyes of Azzuri and Steve, plus their allies, Wakandan spy Nanali and Howling Commando Gabe Jones – all four are said to be playable throughout the season. Marvel 1943, so that all will have a say in the matter.
Marvel 1943: Rise of the Hydra is expected to be released in 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
