OpenAI’s efforts to develop its next major version, GPT-5, are backfiring, with results that don’t justify the cost, according to new report in the Wall Street Journal.
This is understandable old report in The Information shows that OpenAI is looking for new ways like GPT-5 may not show as big a jump as previous models. But the WSJ article includes additional information on the 18-month development of GPT-5, known as Orion.
OpenAI is said to have completed at least two major studies, which aim to improve the model by training on large amounts of data. Initial studies have been slower than expected, pointing out that a large scale run will take more time and money. And while GPT-5 may perform better than its predecessors, it hasn’t advanced enough to justify the cost of making the model work.
The WSJ also reported that instead of relying on publicly available data and licenses, OpenAI has also recruited people to create new insights by writing code or solving mathematical problems. It is also using products made by a different brand, o1.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company has already done so it may not be releasing the code named Orion this year.
