Two goals in the first two minutes as Kane returns from injury in the Bundesliga

Harry Kane returned from almost three weeks out with injury when Bayern hosted RB Leipzig on Friday – but Jamal Musiala stole the show by scoring after one minute.

England captain Kane played a part in the opener with a pass to Michael Olise, who set up Musial for the German international’s fourth goal in four games from close range.

Leipzig were behind with less than 60 seconds left when Lois Openda burst into the area and set up Benjamin Sesko to tap in.

The tie marked the first time in the history of the German first division that two teams scored in the first two minutes of the game.

The return of Kane’s injury

Bundesliga top scorer Kane has missed three league games and one in the Champions League with a hamstring problem and his absence was most felt in Bayern’s 2-1 defeat at Mainz on Saturday – their first league defeat since Vincent Kompany was appointed manager in May.

There was no need for Kane to restore Bayern’s early lead against Leipzig, as former Red Bulls midfielder Konrad Laimer completed a one-two with Olise to strike them in the attack after 25 minutes.

Laimer’s first league goal of the season was his second in three games after scoring in a 5–1 win against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on 10 December.

As if inspired by being able to call upon their most prolific player again, Bayern then added a third courtesy of Joshua Kimmich.

The German midfielder scored from 25 meters in the 36th minute, ending more than a year’s wait for a league goal in spectacular fashion.

Bayern vs. Leipzig

Kane has 19 goals in 17 Bundesliga and Champions League games in 2024/25, but the 31-year-old perhaps showed his rustiness from the opportunity three minutes later, producing an uncharacteristically tame effort that routinely beat goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

Bayern started the evening four points ahead of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen with a significantly better goal difference after 14 games for both teams.

Marco Rose’s Leipzig have won their last two league games and knew a win would send them into second place, three points behind Bayern.
