Bluesky is released an update which fixes one important potential problem leading to imitation on a decentralized social network. Now, when you verify your platform and domain identity, Bluesky will not release your old .bsky.social domain name. Previously, going through the verification process would make your original .bsky.social domain available again, which meant you had to register again to protect your old handle if you didn’t want copycats to collect it.
The social network has been trying to fix its verification issues, which became a major problem after the service received a large number of new users in recent months. A third party from Cornell Tech who analyzed the app’s user base has already found that 44 percent of Bluesky’s 100 most followed accounts have a doppelganger. In response, Bluesky depending on Imitation policies are very aggressive and require people to mock, mock or fan accounts to refer to themselves in this way in their parks and their lives at the end of November. It also specifically banned social media manipulation, where users start out as impersonators to gain followers and then change their identity later to avoid coercion.
In addition to keeping your old handle, the updated Bluesky app adds a “Mentions” tab in notifications, making it easier to find responses to your posts. Like Seaside posts, it also has a new button that lets you choose how answers appear, so you can choose to view them in a row or in a conversation.
