Heung-Min Son’s goal from a corner helped secure Tottenham’s 4-3 victory over Manchester United in an eventful Carabao Cup quarter-final.
Dominic Solanke’s return and Dejan Kulusevski’s try looked like a comfortable night for Spurs, but two mistakes from goalkeeper Fraiser Forster brought United back into the game.
An initial sloppy pass allowed Joshua Zirkzee to reduce the deficit before Amad Diallo closed his clearance to set up a nervy finish.
But United’s hopes of making a remarkable comeback were dashed when Son headed home directly from a corner in another horrendous moment for the goalkeeper, this time visiting stopper Altay Bayindir.
Jonny Evans pulled one back for United in added time, but it was not enough to prevent Ange Postecoglou’s men from joining Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle in the semi-finals.
The hosts took the lead through Solanke inside 15 minutes after substitute goalkeeper Altay Bayindir failed to deal with James Maddison’s free-kick and the former Bournemouth striker made no mistake with the deflection.

Kulusevski then saved the United stopper, turning the defender brilliantly before his sharp drive was denied.
The Swedish forward was at the center of another close shave for the Red Devils as a clever combination with Heung-Min Song eventually found a way through and his pass was blocked by Manuel Ugarte narrowly missing the goal.
And the in-form 24-year-old scored his goal, his fourth in as many games, less than a minute into the second half as Lisandro Martinez mishandled Maddison’s shot, allowing the Spurs player to capitalize on another United mistake.

For the second time this season, Spurs went 3-0 up against United when Solanke sprung the offside trap before beating Martinez and Evans before scoring his second with ease.

Substitute Joshua Zirkzee created United’s first notable chance of the second half, heading the ball towards goal and forcing Forster to make a strong save.
However, the goalkeeper’s joy was short-lived as he carelessly gave the ball to Bruno Fernandes, who found Zirkzee and reduced the score with an easy finish.

That goal threatened to unsettle Spurs and spur United on, and substitute Amad Diallo saw a deflected shot narrowly miss the post after a series of corners.
Soon it was 3-2 in the most unusual way, all thanks to the hosts. A sloppy set of passes put Forster under pressure before Amad closed in on the veteran stopper’s strike and diverted it to send shock waves across north London.

Hearts continued to be in mouths as the final 10 minutes approached, particularly when Forster decided to bizarrely save Amado’s long-range strike with his legs rather than his hands.
But United’s hopes of an improbable comeback ended when Son hit the net from a rare Spurs corner, the ball eluding Bayandira in another goalkeeping moment to forget in this Carabao Cup tie.

Just when you thought the action was over, Evans scored United’s third but it wasn’t enough to stop Spurs progressing as Postecoglou keeps his promise of a trophy in his second season in charge.
