OpenAI today announced its most straightforward version artificial intelligence example to date – which takes more time to discuss questions – just one day later Google announced its first version of the brand.
The new version of OpenAI, called o3, replaces o1, which the company was introduced in September. Like o1, this new model takes time and focus on the problem to provide good answers to questions that require careful thought. (OpenAI chose to skip the “o2” moniker because it’s the name of a UK phone carrier.)
“We see this as the beginning of the next phase of AI,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Friday. “Where you can use these models to do very complex tasks that require a lot of thinking.”
The o3 model scores higher on a number of tests than its predecessors, OpenAI says, including those that measure writing skills and advanced math and science skills. It is three times better than o1 in answering questions asked by ARC-AGIa benchmark designed to test the ability of AI models to think through the most complex mathematical and conceptual problems they encounter for the first time.
Google is following a similar search strategy. Noam Shazeer, a researcher at Google, yesterday was revealed in a post on X that the company has developed its own method, called Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking. Google CEO Sundar Pichai called it “our most thoughtful model” in a statement your post. Google’s new model did very well on the SWE-Bench, a test that measures technical skills.
However, the new OpenAI version of o3 is 20 percent better than o1. “O3 blew it out of the water,” he says About the mediapostdoctoral researcher at Princeton University who helped develop the SWE-Bench. “Incredibly increased, I don’t know how they did it.”
These two models show the competition between OpenAI and Google to be fiercer than ever. It is important for OpenAI to demonstrate that it can continue to advance as it seeks to attract more investment and create a profitable business. Google currently wants to show that it remains at the forefront of AI research.
These new models also show how the AI industry is increasingly looking beyond just developing AI models to tapping into the greater intelligence within them.
