Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim said his side were the better side in their 4-3 defeat to Tottenham in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Thursday, but said they were undone by the hosts’ more clinical play.
United trailed 3-0 shortly after the break but scored twice inside seven minutes to bring the game back to life and keep the pressure on even after Son Heung-min scored a fourth for the hosts.
Jonny Evans’ late header threatened extra time, but Spurs managed to secure a place in the semi-finals.
“We separated at the beginning of the second half, it was a difficult moment for us, 10 minutes. And then we (came back), I think we did a great job,” Amorim told Sky Sports.
“I think if you look at the whole game, I think we were the better team, but they were more clinical. (We lost) the game, but the boys’ fight was very important for me.
All in all, it was a good match, but there is no taste in it. We didn’t win, we have to focus on the next game.”
Amorim, who took over from Erik ten Hag in November, said 13-year-old United still have a long way to go before they can challenge for the Premier League title.
“We are progressing as a team… our goal is to win the Premier League. How long will it take? I don’t know, but that is our goal,” he added.
United host sixth-placed Bournemouth on Sunday.
