James Bond (a movie director, not a spy) could be in serious danger

Movie icon and super spy James Bond seems to have risen to the top of the box a few years ago, but things have been as quiet as a Walther PPK with a silencer since then. Daniel Craig took the role in 2006 and Casino Royale and passed the baton with the 2021’s No Time to Die in the most heartbreaking ending in Bond movie history (you cried, admit it).

The only sad thing is why we haven’t seen a new Bond film since then.

The Wall Street Journal Reports say Amazon and Barbara Broccoli, the producer who inherited the franchise from her father and filmmaker Albert “Cubby” Broccoli after his death in 1996, are in the midst of a nasty fight that has halted production of the next Bond film. Apparently, Barbara doesn’t trust Amazon and her family’s popular movie franchise.

How bad is it? Well, here’s a quote from Barbara to some of her friends explaining how she feels about the people who run Amazon’s media: “These people are idiots.” Man, that’s a no-brainer with a capital “awk”.

The crisis started again in 2021 when Amazon bought MGM for $8.5 billion and thus got the rights to distribute Bond films, according to Various. The deal was seen as Amazon’s biggest foray into Hollywood using one of its most popular and solid franchises.

Unfortunately for Amazon, the real power behind the James Bond movies lies with Broccoli. He’s offered ideas for Bond’s big screen shows and when they start production, and Broccoli doesn’t want to work with Amazon any time soon. Price WSJ spoke to 20 people familiar with the dispute who say Broccoli feels that Amazon is not the right place to watch a Bond movie because its main business is sales and marketing.

When Amazon bought MGM, getting the rights to the Bond franchise was a big part of the deal. Broccoli and co-producer Michael Wilson had some backlogs but were assured they would continue to improve their art. The COVID lockdown was making it difficult to jump into the next Bond film. However, things seem to be going well between the two parties as Amazon has once again insisted on its next Bond movie No Time to Die they will find theatrical release.

But as soon as the deal ended, Amazon executives began to think about ways to expand the Bond film to other mediums such as the Moneypenny spinoff series for Prime Video or a spy movie or TV show that took place in the Bond universe. Broccoli refused to let any of these things go forward. He was also pleased with Jennifer Salke who used the word “content” to describe new James Bond projects and any ideas Amazon had for Bond were listed “TBD” in memos. So far, the only Bond position that Amazon can get Broccoli to sign is an actual series 007: The Way to a Million which is entering its second season.

Broccoli and his family have been part of the Bond film industry throughout his life so he is fiercely protective of the brand and his father’s cinematic legacy. He has also started training Wilson’s son Gregg to produce the latest episodes and may prepare him for a license one day. Although this has led to disagreement over who should play Bond in the next film. I just think we’re going to get one and it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen anytime soon.
