In its initial responses, ChatGPT did not provide any product links. But it gives them easily when I ask, and even though I didn’t click anything, nothing seems to have been. it’s a nightmare. But Claude apologized and said that “it cannot be linked to websites or other things directly.” Anthropic hasn’t released a version of Claude online, but the company says it’s working on it.
This made Claude an unnecessary chat I tried to buy. But it also means that Anthropic has so far avoided venturing into the murky territory of allowing its AI chatbots to delete comments written by people online. Instead, Claude bases his comparisons on the past. Confusion, on the other hand, says that thanks to Buy with Pro, people “no longer need to look at the many product reviews.”
When I asked Perplexity what I should get my editor/musician friend, he recommended a solar bike light (I also realized he was a cyclist). It wasn’t a bad idea, but not exactly the right birthday present. I kept changing my mind. How about a leather guitar strap? Down the rabbit hole I went.
The purpose of my shopping spree, I began to understand, wasn’t just to help me think of new ideas or give thoughtful gifts. Disruption is playing the long game, gradually drawing our attention away from the competitive corners of the internet, better understanding how people like me are using its platform, and feeding that data into its ever-changing AI models. Every time I had to revise my search because the first result was missing, I remained in the Perplexity program, which meant that I was not on Amazon and not on Google (although I ended up on both sites in the end). Perplexity Pro is not a complete ecommerce site, nor is it a “helper” by any means, but I am one of the millions of people who provide the information needed to become those products.
When I turned to Google Gemini, I found that the gifts given to my 16-year-old granddaughter were not only bad, but also unorganized and, at times, confusing. He said I should buy him a “cat blanket so he can sleep with a good book,” but it wasn’t clear if the blanket was for him or his cat. The Kindle was a good idea. But I’m afraid of what he might text me if I sent him an SAT prep book Gemini said (maybe “thx,” nothing else). The program’s recommendations to my editor/musician friend were also unimpressive, among them “Vinyl Record,” and “High quality headphones.”

The new type of AI will “think of several options for the future, and take action on your behalf,” the company said he says. At the moment, this means taking action on behalf of the developers – taking action by following their own written procedures – but I look forward to the day when it can stop on my shopping list.
