ChatGPT adds integrations for PC and Mac, and comes close to testing your computer

OpenAI has expanded the number of applications that its desktop software can work with, including allowing Advanced Voice Mode to work with other applications, and is approaching ChatGPT using desktop applications.

Also added Warp and Prompt terminal programs as integration. The software integrates with VS Code, Xcode, Terminal, iTerm 2 and TextEdit as integrated applications.

But coding applications aren’t the only things that ChatGPT desktop software can access. OpenAI also added Apple Notes, Notion and Quip to its integrations. Advanced Voice Mode can work with these programs, taking into account the project’s performance.

OpenAI emphasized that users must provide ChatGPT permission to use this feature.

Allow ChatGPT to use your computer for you

The integration of software with AI chatbots is not new. In October, GitHub The agent added coding platform integration. Connecting apps to ChatGPT or Copilot brings content from these platforms into the chat. Developers can call on ChatGPT to get help writing a project they have in VS Code, and the chatbot understands what they’ve been working on.

Kevin Weil, chief product officer at OpenAI, said during the presentation that improving the desktop app will help the company get closer to ChatGPT users.

“We’ve been putting a lot of effort into our computer programs,” Weil said. “As our models grow, ChatGPT will become more reliable. This means we will go beyond just questions and answers; ChatGPT will start doing things for you.”

He added that computer software is “a big part” of this change.

“Being a desktop app you can do a lot more than a web browser,” he said. “This includes things like, with your permission, being able to see what’s on your screen and being able to automate many of the tasks you’re doing on your computer. We’ll have more to say about this as we move into 2025.”

If OpenAI allows ChatGPT to see more information about your computer, ChatGPT will come close to Anthropic’s Claude Computer Usage The feature, which allows Claude to click around a person’s computer, look at pictures and write notes.

How to get it

On MacOS, users who want to open ChatGPT while using other programs can use “option + space” to drag ChatGPT and select the desired program through the button on the chat screen. Another shortcut, “option + shift + 1,” brings up the most advanced program in use.

Integrations are available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise and Edu users. However, Enterprise and Edu subscribers must ask their IT administrators to enable the feature.
