Trump: Canada becomes 51st state ‘a great idea’



President-elect Trump took issue with Canada early on Wednesday, asking why the US provides subsidies to its northern neighbor and suggesting it should become the 51st state.

“Can no one answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? It makes no sense!” trump he wrote on Social Truth. “Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st state.”

“They would save a lot on taxes and military protection. I think it’s a great idea,” he added. “Status 51!!!”

His joke comes after the president-elect announced last month which would impose a 25 percent tariff on goods imported into the United States from Canada and Mexico, with an additional 10 percent to China. Trump said the move would put pressure on trading partners to better crack down on the movement of fentanyl and other drugs into the US and strengthen border security.
