Barcelona have reportedly warned centre-back Ronald Araujo and midfielder Frenkie de Jong that they will be sold if they haven’t signed new contracts before the end of the season.
La Blaugrana are close to returning to La Liga’s 1:1 spending rules – the ability to spend €1 for every €1 raised – and are now focusing on handing out new contracts to some of their most valuable players.
Gavi and Pedri have already agreed on long-term extensions, but, according to the words Reliefthere is some concern when it comes to both Araujo and De Jong.
Both players are approaching the final 18 months of their contracts and Barcelona they reportedly made it clear that they would not be allowed to enter the final year of their contracts.
Araujo and De Jong have therefore been warned that they must sign new contracts before 30 June 2025 or face being sold.
There have been mixed signals when it comes to Araujo’s future, with one report recently claiming that he is fears that the defender could leave on a free transfer. However, this latest report says there is optimism that an extension will be agreed soon.
It is known that Araujo wants to stay in Barcelona and that his salary will be increased if he decides to extend his contract.
As for De Jong, the Dutch midfielder has already let his extension offer expire, which included a salary deferral. Barcelona have made it clear that he will not receive a pay rise and must instead accept a contract that will limit the impact of his current salary on the club’s finances.
The biggest worry for Barcelona is losing any player for free. Both De Jong and Araujo can command hefty transfer fees, and club officials have warned the pair will not be allowed to make decisions about their futures forever.
