I’m in Los Angeles for The Game AwardsI had access to the parking lot. There, when he had power, I could see a beautiful new game, Revenge of the Savage Planet.
The sci-fi thriller is coming from Raccoon Logic in May 2025 for PC and consoles. The Montreal-based studio revealed the game as part of its PC gaming franchise and released a new trailer showing the return of Martin Tweed, CEO of Kindred Aerospace.
This game is the sequel to Journey to the Savage Planet, which started in 2020 from the publisher 505 Games. The game had a long journey. It was the first project of Typhoon Studios, which was started by Alex Hutchinson, the game director of Assassin’s Creed III and Far Cry 4 at Ubisoft. It was a rare comic sci-fi game with bright colors inspired by Men in Black and Ghostbusters. In this game, you are sent to explore a planet and see if it is habitable.
Google acquired Typhoon Studios in 2019 and launched Journey to the Savage Planet on Google Stadia, a cloud gaming service. On the set date of February 1, 2021, Google also shut down Storm. Former members of Typhoon then founded Raccoon Logic in August 2021 and later acquired the intellectual rights to Savage Planet. Raccoon Logic hired about 30 people, received funding from Tencent, and built the game for less than $10 million.
Tweed’s new rival is Gunther Harrison, CEO of Alta Interglobal, a rival company to Kindred Aerospace. Once again, a scientist is sent to explore and colonize a new world, but in the middle of the journey the scientist is chased away by Alta Interglobal, which decided that the goal of establishing a distant star is too expensive. Then the ship crashes on a new planet. Abandoned by your organization, your mission is to survive and find a way back home.
I started playing the tutorial and it was easy for me to understand. While looking at the beautiful scenery, I had to look for treasures of animals, plants, rocks, etc. Then I took them back to the 3D printer and printed things out. The world is full of funny animals and critters. And there’s a lot of goo to trouble you as you walk through it.
I learned how to use a scanner, which can tell you what you are going through and how it can help you. You can step on small creatures and they turn into green goo. Some creatures have resources. You can join the ball-like creatures called Brainards and watch them bounce and move. Every time I have a goal to create something with my 3D printer, an entry point appears in the margin so I can search for what I need. If I lost, I had to click on the right stick to see where my aim was.
After learning this lesson, I moved to the middle of the game, where I could jump and climb. Through the planet and its bright gravity, I ascended through the air from one giant rock to another. I encountered purple wolf-like creatures that were angry at me. They chased me for a long time and I had to keep jumping to escape. I thought he was tired of chasing me but he still hates me. Then I moved to the top of the rock and jumped on top of them. It turned out that was their weakness.
One of the interesting things is that there is more than one planet that can be visited in the game, which makes the name of the game seem like a misnomer. Instead, you have to survive on four dangerous planets and explore everything you find. Plants are very different on all planets.
As for the strange creatures, you can use your gun to shoot them or catch them with a lasso. You can grab it and put it in the notebook. I enjoyed this game with its funny colors and good humor. I look forward to seeing more.
After the show, I had an interview with Steven Masters, a game developer at Raccoon Logic. He told me that the first game did well because it wasn’t as rare as a game in a market full of big games. What was the purpose of the sequel?
“We just wanted to do big,” Masters said.
He added, “We wanted to continue the idea of telling the company’s toys, enjoy more humor within the game, and be a little more relaxed. One of our main decisions was to switch from first-person to third-person. It helps us bring more humor to the character, improve other by platform. You have more personality within the culture.”
When the person runs, they bend their legs and put their knees up, like they are marching. Masters said it looked silly but was inspired by people passing by on the beach.
The game will have about 15 to 20 hours of gameplay. Depending on your preference for pioneering, Revenge of the Savage Planet can be played solo, or co-op (either screen/sofa co-op or online), and play on a variety of platforms.
There were two different endings to Journey to the Savage Planet, and this one will have three as there are more stories, Masters said.
It seems like a lot of work for a team of 30 people to do on a budget of less than $10 million, but the team has a lot of experience in different industries.
There has been chaos in the game. AI has not been useful in this field so far. But somehow the 30-person studio is thriving.
“Our main focus is keeping the system stable. We’re not trying to expand to make another 500-person game like-a-job. We just wanted to do something small and focused that represents what we want to play, that we believe resonates with our players.”
The team has been testing many games with a dedicated team of playtesters.
“We’re all very passionate and we all know our business,” Masters said. “We’re able to do it very quickly and easily.”
