Southampton parted ways with manager Russell Martin after a 5-0 defeat by Tottenham left the club nine points off Premier League safety.
The 38-year-old successfully guided the Saints back to the Premier League last season, winning promotion with a memorable play-off final victory over Leeds at Wembley.
However, this campaign has been a stark contrast, with Southampton enduring a torrid run of form, losing 13 of their 16 league games so far.
The team’s only league win this season came against Everton in November, and they struggled to find the net, scoring just 11 goals – the lowest in the league.
In a statement, Southampton said: “At the start of the season we all knew the challenges we would face this year as we adapt to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world.
“However, the reality of our situation is clear. The board has been supportive of Russell and his staff and has been open and transparent about our expectations.
We can confirm that we have made the difficult decision to part ways with our men’s first team manager, Russell Martin.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have given to the club on and off the pitch over the last 18 months.
“Everyone associated with Southampton FC will always have fantastic memories of last season, especially winning the play-off final in May.”
Simon Rusk, the club’s under-21 manager, has been appointed interim head coach and will oversee the senior side starting with Wednesday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Martin’s departure coincides with another managerial departure in the Premier League, as Wolves also announced the sacking of Gary O’Neill on the same day.
Southampton’s struggles in the top flight this season have highlighted the difficulties of adapting to life in the Premier League and the club will now look for a new direction to rekindle their survival hopes.
