Former world champions Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld led tributes to the family of Wayne Mardle, following the death of his wife Donna ahead of the World Darts Championships.
Donna Mardle died aged 52 earlier this week, following a short illness, and Sky Sports Darts announced her death during its coverage of the opening day of this year’s competition at Alexandra Palace.
“Wayne is the heart and soul of everything we do here at Sky Sports Darts, but the heart of his world, his wonderful wife Donna, sadly passed away earlier this week after a short illness,” presenter Emma Paton said during coverage.
“We will remember Donna throughout this tournament. Wayne, you are in our thoughts, you are in our hearts, we love you very much and we will see you very soon.”
The PDC released a short statement following the announcement of her death, which said: “All our thoughts and condolences are with Wayne Mardle and his family, following the death of his wife Donna earlier this week.”
The darts world was quick to express their condolences on social media, with players – past and present – and fans sending their wishes of support to Mardle and his family.
Taylor, a 16-time world champion, said on X: “So sad to hear of Donna Mardle’s passing. Thoughts and prayers go out to all the family.”
Five-time world champion Van Barneveld added: “Very shocked and saddened to hear tonight that Donna Mardle has passed away. My condolences and thoughts to you @Wayne501Mardle and family.”
Former BDO World Champion Stephen Bunting, also part of this year’s line-up, posted: “My thoughts, prayers and heartfelt condolences are with Wayne and his family on the sad loss of his beloved wife and best friend Donna.”
Steve Beaton, who ended his streak of 33 consecutive appearances at the World Darts Championship when he failed to qualify, said: “Life is so short. I love you mate.”
