“Frankly speaking” – former Leeds defender slams club over ‘stunning’ contract situation

Leeds United’s decision to let Junior Firp’s contract expire in the final months has been described as ‘stunning’ by Jon Newsome.

Firpo has emerged as a key player for Leeds since joining from Barcelona in 2021, contributing three goals and 15 assists in 100 appearances in all competitions.

This season alone, the full-back has scored once and set up three goals in 15 league appearances.

However, his current contract at Elland Road is set to expire at the end of this season and a new deal is not imminent.

Firpo himself threw his future into doubt in November when he admitted he ‘has options’ to leave Leeds United.

“Football is like that. One day you are here, the next day you are there. But this is a topic I’ve been talking to myself about since we got relegated.” said the 28-year-old. “Obviously I could have done the same (as the others who left), I could have left.

“I have my options, I think everyone knows, it’s not something I can hide. I had options and could have left, but as you say, my family settled here. We are doing very well at the moment, but we don’t know what the future holds for me.”

That such an important player has been allowed to expire so low will be a huge source of frustration for Leeds fans.

Former Whites defender Newsome called the situation ‘astonishing’, highlighting both the quality on the pitch and the transfer value Firpo brings.

“To be honest, I’m absolutely amazed that a football club would allow any player to enter the final year of their contract,” the pundit told the BBC (via MOT Leeds News).

“Even if things change in the summer, the club is promoted to the Premier League, is he a Premier League footballer, do you want to keep him?

“If the club isn’t progressing and the financial constraints mean he’s on an exorbitant salary – at least you can free him for money, so I think that’s absolutely stunning.”
