Meta sent a letter to California’s attorney general on Thursday urging him to block OpenAI from turning into a for-profit company, a move that Meta says “would be wrong” and “could lead to the proliferation of the same start-up businesses that are only known for charity until they turn a profit.” The letter from Meta Platforms to to Attorney General Rob Bonta, it was first reported by comes after in late November that also called for the OpenAI conversion to be banned.
Meta argues in his letter, which has published in full, that OpenAI managed to raise billions of dollars from investors under its original non-profit project and now “it wants to change its shape and keep all the advantages that made it to where it is today.” It goes on to say, “OpenAI should not be allowed to violate the law by taking and reclaiming the resources it created as a resource and using them for private gain.” The letter also asks the attorney general to review OpenAI’s previous actions as ineffective. Engadget has contacted OpenAI for comment.
