Man City vs Man Utd: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

The big Manchester derby is coming to Premier League on Sunday when the two biggest teams in the country meet at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City’s unexpected and catastrophic slump in form has been one of the main stories of the season so far, with their latest defeat coming in the Champions League as their hopes of reaching the knockout stages suffered a major blow at Juventus.

Their opponents managed to shake off two defeats in a row by toppling Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League, but their position in England’s top flight needs improvement as Ruben Amorim charges up the ladder.

Here’s everything you need to know about Sunday’s big Manchester derby.

CityA strong core of defenders is currently depleted, with John Stones and Nathan Ake unavailable for Sunday’s derby and Manuel Akanji unlikely to recover in time. Because of those absences, 19-year-old Jahmai Simpson-Pusey could start the third game this season.

Adding to Pep Guardiola’s woes is the suspension handed out to Rico Lewis, who was sent off for two penalty offenses in 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace last week.

Rodri and Oscar Bobb remain sidelined with long-term problems.

Man City predicted line-up against Man Utd (4-1-4-1): Ortega; Walker, Dias, Simpson-Pusey, Guardiol; Kovačić; Savinho, Silva, De Bruyne, Nunes; Haaland.

Luke Shaw

United have a relatively clean sheet as they bid for a first league win at the Etihad since 2021.

The Red Devils have passed Europa League win over Viktoria Plzen on Thursday no further injury problems and Jonny Evans could return to the squad on matchday to give head coach Amorim another option.

Luke Shaw is the only player definitively ruled out as he recovers from his latest form setback.

Predicted line-up Man Utd vs Man City (3-4-2-1): Onana; Yoro, De Ligt, Martinez; Amad, Ugarte, Mainoo, Dalot; Fernandes, Rashford; Hojlund.

Man City have enjoyed this game in recent years, but it will be a very different atmosphere on Sunday, with a big win not automatically expected as usual.

The reigning English champions have struggled to achieve consistency and injuries to their key centre-back position will be music to United’s squad’s ears.

Amorim already secured a big win against Guardiola this season when Sporting CP demolished City in the Champions League. His formation is likely to cause problems for a mismatched City and the Red Devils should be able to secure a share of the spoils.

Prediction: Man City 2-2 Man Utd
