Eddie Howe takes out his frustration on Joelinton after an unnecessary yellow card

Eddie Howe has slammed Joelinton for his stupidity in picking up a yellow card in Newcastle’s 4-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday.

The Brazilian was objectively excellent against the Foxes, completing 93% of his passes and creating two chances – including one big chance – while attempting three shots and making two clearances.

However, Joelinton was booked in the 71st minute for a late tackle on James Justin.

with magpies already 4-0 up, it was a challenge Joelinton should not have made and will now prove quite costly as the 28-year-old will miss Newcastle’s visit to Ipswich Town next Saturday.

Newcastle manager Howe will be even more confused and frustrated with his midfielder, having warned him against a yellow card just minutes before Joelinton foolishly ran into the challenge.

“It’s bizarre how things work. I’m talking to him from the side, he’s in front of me and I say ‘Joey, don’t get booked’ and he’s like ‘don’t worry, I won’t’. Two minutes later he receives a yellow card. You just couldn’t settle down,” Howe told reporters after the impressive win (via Chronicle).

He added: “In a sense sometimes these things happen. I’m disappointed to lose him because he’s a player we need in every away game, but at least now he can play freely and play his normal game.”

Joelinton out for one game, Nick Pope for a month

Saturday’s win ends a four-game winless run for Newcastle and sees them climb to 11th in the table, just four points off Manchester City in fifth and five out of a Champions League spot.

But the Magpies face a challenging festive schedule which starts with an EFL Cup clash with Brentford on Wednesday and also includes games against Aston Villa, Man Utd and Tottenham.

While Joelinton is suspended for just one league game, Newcastle will have to make do without goalkeeper Nick Pope — who was replaced by Martin Dubravka through injury on Saturday.

“He has seen a specialist and the feedback is that he will be out for about a month, so bad timing for us and for Nick as there are a lot of games in that four week period. “Hopefully after those four weeks he’ll be in good enough shape to play,” Howe said of Pope.

“He got injured just passing the ball against Brentford. It looked really harmless, it was a left-footed pass, but his knee wasn’t particularly good after that, so that’s the plan.”
