Only Apple we just started list of AI features on its devices, and we’re already seeing big problems. For example, a BBC has complained to Apple after the AI-powered information summary re-wrote a BBC the title of UHC’s top killer Luigi Mangione shot himself. Mangione did not shoot himself and remains in police custody.
Apple Intelligence also includes an iOS feature that tries to eliminate user fatigue by bundling and summarizing information that comes from individual apps. For example, if a user receives multiple messages from the same person, instead of displaying them all in a long list, iOS will now try to summarize the push notifications into a summary message.
It turns out – and this should not surprise anyone familiar with AI – the “intelligence” in Apple Intelligence contradicts the fact that it is brief in some cases. unfortunate or just wrong. Notifications was introduced to iOS in version 18.1 which was released back in October; earlier this week, Apple added their integration with ChatGPT to Siri.
In a storyand BBC shared a notification image summarizing three different stories that were sent as push notifications. The notice reads: “Luigi Mangione shot himself; Syrian women hope Assad will pay the price; South Korean police raid Yoon Suk Yeol’s office. Another summary was correct, a BBC he says.
The BBC has filed a complaint with Apple over the matter, embarrassing the tech company and damaging social media’s reputation if readers believe it is posting fake news. They have no control over how iOS chooses to summarize their information.
“BBC News is the most trusted news in the world,” a BBC The Prophet said in this regard. “It is important to us that our audience trusts any information or journalism that is published in our name and information.” Apple declined to respond to The BBC is questions about the snafu.
Artificial Intelligence has great potential in many areas, but language models are perhaps one of the worst trends. But there’s a lot of industry hope that the technology will be so good that businesses can rely on it to use it as a chat for customer service or to search through large sets of internal information. But not yet – in fact, businesses using AI say they still have to more updates about the work it does.
It feels counterintuitive for Apple to include unreliable and unpredictable technology in its products. Apple has no control over ChatGPT’s output—chat developer OpenAI can’t control languages, and their systems are updated frequently. Brief information needs to be a simple thing for AI to succeed, and Apple is doing the same.
At the very least, some of Apple’s Intelligence products show how AI can be used effectively. Better image editing and features that understand what information needs to be sent are great. But for a company connected to a polished experience, the wrong information summary and the slick ChatGPT can make iOS look unpolished. It sounds like they’re running on the hype train to sell new iPhone products – an iPhone 15 Pro or newer is required to use the feature.
