US military flies missing American out of Syria

The US military flew on Friday to missing US citizen out of Syria this week, after the stunning autumn of the regime of Syrian leader Bashar Assad.

Travis Timmerman was transferred to US forces in Syria on Friday, according to a defense official, and was transferred to Jordan.

US Central Command, the military headquarters in the Middle East region, is working with the State Department to ensure Timmerman can return home safely, the official added. He was released from a prison in the capital Damascus earlier this week, a day later Assad’s regime collapsed to a coalition of opposition forces.

Timmerman, 29, was last seen in Budapest, Hungary, in June and had not been seen or heard from for months.

he he told The Associated Press he had gone on a Christian pilgrimage to Lebanon and crossed into Syria, where he was detained and interrogated for hours before being transferred to a notorious prison known as the Palestine Branch.

When they first saw him this week, Timmerman was mistaken for Austin Tice, an American freelance journalist who has been missing since 2012 in Syria.

Timmerman, who is from Urbana, Missouri, he told NBC News that his imprisonment was good for him and that it was a “time of solace, of meditation, and I am stronger for it.”
