The only test of England Women’s Tour to South Africa 2024 begins on Sunday, December 15, at Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.
South Africa, under the leadership Laura Wolvaardtthey will be looking to bounce back from back-to-back series defeats against England, losing the ODI series 2-1 and the T20I series 3-0. Meanwhile, Heather KnightEngland will look to maintain their dominance over the Proteas on this tour.
Namely, this match marks the eighth Test meeting between the two teams in women’s cricket. The previous test was held in June 2022. Of the seven previous matches, five ended in draws, while England won the remaining two. This Test presents a golden opportunity for South Africa to change their fortunes and for England to further cement their supremacy.
The pitch at Mangaung Oval has gained a reputation for its balanced nature, offering both batsmen and bowlers opportunities to excel. While batsmen can use consistent bounce and pace to produce meaningful innings, bowlers, especially early in the game, can find help from the surface, especially when moving off the pitch or swinging in the air.
Interestingly, the teams that chose to bowl first experienced a slightly higher success rate, suggesting that early match conditions often favored the bowlers. This trend highlights the potential for early breakthroughs, which can put the attacking side under pressure and set the tone for the rest of the game.
