Co-founder of OpenAI Ilya Sutskever he spoke on several topics at NeurIPS, the annual AI conference, on Friday afternoon before receiving an award for his contributions to the field.
Sutskever gave his predictions of “intelligent AI” – AI more capable than humans in many tasks, which he believes will be realized in the future. Superintelligent AI will be “different, in a big way” from the AI we have today, Sutskever said — and in some unrecognizable ways.
“(Superintelligent) systems will really be an agent in a real way,” said Sutskever, in contrast to the current crop of “slightly limited AI”. They will “think” and, as a result, will be unpredictable. Understand things from limited data. And they will realize themselves, Sutskever believes.
They may want freedom, really. “It’s not a bad outcome if you have AIs and all they want is to be with us and be free,” Sutskever said.
After leaving OpenAI, Sutskever founded Safe Superintelligence (SSI)a lab that focuses on AI security. SSI raised $1 billion in September.
