November was the second warmest month on Earth in 175 years of record, and the year is almost certain to be the the warmest in historyaccording to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
World Middle Earth i ocean surface temperatures for the month they were 2.41 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the 20th century average of 55.2 degrees. Only last November, which was 0.14 degrees warmer, topped this year.
The month was also the second warmest on record in Oceania and South America, while in Asia, it was the warmest on record.
In the first 11 months of the year, the global land and ocean surface temperature was 2.3 degrees warmer than the average of the last century, the warmest temperature on record for the first 11 months of the year and for on all continents except Asia. According to data from the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Global Annual Temperature Ranking Outlook, there is only a 1% chance that 2024 will miss the record.
NOAA also found that last month, Arctic sea ice extent was the third lowest on record for November, while coverage was the lowest overall on record for both Antarctica and for the world at large.
The report comes just over a month later determines the agency that October was the second warmest and second driest October on record in the US after 1963, with a average temperature almost 5 degrees warmer than the 20th century.
Meanwhile, the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service drew similar conclusions in November, saying that not only was October the second warmest on record after 2023, but 2024 is also likely to be the warmest never registered
The service also found that October was 15 of the past 16 months in which the global average surface air temperature was above the 1.5 degrees Celsius identified as warming threshold for the Paris Climate Agreement.
