Enzo Maresca has made an incredible start to life at Chelsea, but there is one decision that fans and pundits continue to question.
The Italian manager was brought to Stamford Bridge this summer to replace Mauricio Pochettino, and the former Leicester manager currently has the Blues second in the Premier League and top of the European Conference League.
Maresca has found a way to encourage his young group of players at Chelsea to play, but one decision the 44-year-old made before a ball was kicked this season is still being questioned by many in the football world.
The Blues boss has decided make Roberto Sanchez your number one goalkeeper for the seasondespite the London club signing talented 22-year-old Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal in the summer.
Sanchez is an obstacle between the sticks for Chelsea as the Spanish shot-stopper is an average goalkeeper, not good with the ball at his feet and prone to mistakes that lead to goals.
Despite this, Maresca has faith in the 27-year-old, who started all but one Premier League game during the first half of the season – which Jamie Carragher thinks he will cost Chelsea this season.
That won’t change anytime soon, the 44-year-old informed reporters on Friday.
Speaking to reporters ahead of Chelsea’s game with Brentford on Friday, Maresca said Sanchez would not be removed from his role any time soon.
“The idea is not to change, we trust Roberto,” the Italian coach said on the way Fabrizio Romano. “But even in that case, we have two goalkeepers who are both good. As long as they don’t maintain the same level, we’re happy with that.”
This is a decision Maresca will live and die with as the season progresses as it’s a choice that could have a huge impact on Chelsea’s season down the line.
