“It is despicable that Mayor Adams continues to shirk his responsibilities to uphold New York City’s existing policies and values as a sanctuary city by collaborating with Trump’s border czar Tom Homan,” said Murad Awawdeh, president and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition, in a statement.
Adams will meet with Homan Thursday afternoon. Adams had said he wants to sit down with Homan and discuss cooperation in deporting violent criminals specifically. Homan has repeatedly said that threats to public safety will be the priority of the expected mass deportation campaign.

“I’m not going to be at war with this administration, I’m going to work with this administration,” Adams said last week “President Trump is the president-elect. And whoever he chooses to lead his agencies. I look forward to sitting back and watching how we make New York better.”
“I would like to speak with our border tsar and find out what his plans are. Where we have common ground, we can work together. Adams also had a message for critics on the left, telling them to “write me off.”

But that hasn’t stopped activist groups from criticizing the meeting.
“New Yorkers know that under Homan ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) will be used to divide us, targeting us cruelly and demonize immigrants, while making all New Yorkers even more unsafe,” said Awawdeh. “Many of us remember the shooting and street fighting that took place as a result of ICE’s actions in a residential neighborhood in Brooklyn, the 2020, which resulted in a New York immigrant. shot in the face.”

“Study after study shows that cities with large immigrant populations are safer than those with fewer immigrants, and places with sanctuary policies have lower crime rates. Adams is clearly prioritizing his own political interest over those of needs and public safety of all New Yorkers,” Awawdeh added.
Michael Blake, former vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee and New York City mayoral candidate, called the upcoming meeting between Homan and Adams “unfair” and “unfair,” adding that “everyone has a seat on the table” if he is elected mayor. .
Homan, for his part, said last week he was open to a meeting with Adams.

Adams has taken a tougher approach to illegal immigration than many of his Democratic counterparts, even suggesting that sanctuary policies be scaled back to allow the deportation of criminals. Other Democrats have vowed to resist or not attend in expulsion operations.
