Bayern Munich once again found themselves in hot water in the goalkeeping sector.
Manuel Neuer left the recruitment department with a fresh dilemma after suffering a broken rib during the Bavarian giants’ 1-0 DFB Pokal defeat to Bayer Leverkusen last Tuesday.
The Liverpool superstar is now ‘INSANE’ that he wants to leave the club!
Manager Vincent Kompany has confirmed that the 38-year-old goalkeeper is unlikely to play for the club again before the new year (via fcbayern.com): “He broke a rib. He probably won’t play again this year. The most important thing is that he is healing now. Then we hope to have Manu back in January.”
The former German national team player was injured after a collision with Jeremie Frimpong linked with Liverpool.
Reserve striker Daniel Peretz (24) got between the sticks in Bayern’s 5-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League. The Israeli is now set to stay put for the upcoming Bundesliga fixtures against FSV Mainz and RB Leipzig.
Loris Karius’ eyes could be forgiven for bulging to epic proportions if he caught on to reports suggesting a potential return to Germany’s top flight is on the cards – and to 32-time Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich no less!
IMAGE (via bulinews.com) claimed the 31-year-old (last seen for Newcastle United in the 2023/24 campaign) is a potential candidate to bolster Die Roten’s goalkeeping options.
However, reliable insider Christian Falk now has informed CaughtOffsidein his exclusive Fact Files columnthat Bayern habit looking to sign a goalkeeper in January: “The situation in Bayern is a bit complicated. Manuel Neuer is currently injured (broken rib). So, there are big discussions about what to do.
“They have now decided they will not be looking for a new goalkeeper in January – which is bad news for former Liverpool goalkeeper Karius, who was previously linked. He’s out there.”
Bad news indeed for Karius. Although the former Mainz goalkeeper has enjoyed a semi-productive spell in the north-east of England, he has not completely shaken off the specter of Liverpool’s 2018 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
At Bayern’s end of the equation, the club’s recruitment team decided to find a longer-term solution to their goalkeeping conundrum.
To that end, Brighton and Hove Albion’s number 1, Bart Verbruggen, caught the eye of the decision-makers at Säbener Straße.
“Bayern want to agree a loan deal during the summer transfer window to ensure he gets first-team minutes,” pointed out the head of football in Grupa BILD.
“With that in mind, they will need a new back-up keeper for Neuer. Which is why they looked at Bart Verbruggen from Brighton who is very highly rated on the shortlist.”
Falk added: “Now Bayern have decided they need a good goalkeeper behind Neuer due to his injury. Maybe they need one that can also become number one.
“Manuel Neuer will sign a new contract until 2026 (but it’s not official yet), so they want a goalkeeper at a good level, if he has to play, because Neuer is getting old. Don’t think of it as a No. 1 goalie. 2, but about goalkeeper no. 1(a).”
At the age of 22, the Dutchman certainly ticks the boxes in the long run.
More intriguingly, the statistics provider FBref they believe that the football player’s profile is statistically similar to Neuer’s (second only to Bayern’s loan star Alexander Nubel).
However, that being said, Bayern may want to make quick progress in this arena Verbruggen has already attracted some interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid.
