WB Montreal Sports says it will lay off 99 workers ahead of the holidays


As the sports industry prepares for it awards nightmany people are losing their jobs put a damper on some fun activities. The latest casualties are said to be a group of 99 employees of WB Games Montreal.

Radio-Canada says (through Game Maker) that most of the workers who were laid off were sub-contractors through Keywords Studios, a company that provides skills and knowledge to the game industry. Keywords worked on quality assurance Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Speaking of which, the cancellation coincided with Rocksteady’s announcement that it would stop supporting Suicide Squad games on January 14. (WB Games Montreal helped develop the game.) The game launched last February, making it just shy of a year before it pulled the plug. The upcoming episode 8 will be the last.

According to GamesIndustry.bizone fired employee told French-language radio station Radio-Canada that he was given eight weeks’ notice to quit. WB Montreal says it gave them a choice between joining the list of upcoming projects or receiving help from a career advisor. However, the source said that the company doesn’t expect the registry to have any access until 2026. That’s not much of an option unless someone has money to burn.

The news follows the recent dismissal of the Ubisoft, Xbox / Activision Blizzard and… many others too numerous to mention. The sports industry is expected generating more than $187 billion in 2024, 2.1 percent annually.
