NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte expressed concern at the idea of holding peace negotiations for nearly three years. Russia-Ukraine war without Russian President Vladimir Putin “at the table”, calling the move “risky”.
“It is crucial that whenever there is an agreement it is a good deal, with all the elements,” Rutte said during a discussion on Wednesday in Carnegie Europe think tank in Brussels.
“I think those were very good considerations, but, again, to start discussing it, let’s start a kind of debate among ourselves, within the alliance, with our European partners, without having Putin at the table, and that it’s risky,” he added.
Rutte noted that Ukraine should do so start conversations with the Kremlin, but it must do so in a position of “strength”.
NATO leader’s comments his comments were echoed since earlier this month, when he encouraged alliance members to send more weapons to Ukrainian soldiers who may be faltering on the battlefield.
“Make sure that Ukraine has what it needs to get to a position of strength when these peace talks start, when the Ukrainian government has decided that it is ready to do so,” Rutte said before a ministerial conference in ‘Foreign Affairs.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has done it he thanked NATO for its support in the middle of the war, which has caused numerous fatalities.
“If we want to stop the hot phase of the war, we must take under the umbrella of NATO the territory of Ukraine that we have under our control.” he told Sky News.
Rutte also showed optimism peaceful discussions regarding the territories occupied by Russia could be resolved in the future.
“Ukraine is ready for this negotiation with alliance members,” Serhii Kuzan, co-founder and chairman of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation who has served as an adviser to the government in Kiev, said in earlier comments.
“Our main task is to become stronger together and not let Russia become stronger,” he added.
