By last Tuesday, my sciatica symptoms were feeling much better, so I was getting a little too confident. I rode for 90 minutes, and for about 50 minutes I rode upright rather than lying down, which included a lot of standing pedaling. Everything feels great. Then when I got home my sciatica was significantly worse, almost back to day one. My doctor scheduled a virtual appointment for me and prescribed anti-inflammatories, rest (hardly any exercise other than stretching for a week), and ice. I also arranged for a lumbar spine X-ray to rule out sciatica in my spine, and a follow-up check-up with a new orthopedic surgeon my GP found for me.
Here are quotes from the first outbreak two weeks ago: “I think the lesson from this is that I should take it more lightly and make sure I fully recover from my injury on September 18th. Instead, when I start to feel better, I get cocky and dive back into long, hard workouts, forgetting that it takes us older people longer to heal.! Surprisingly, I quickly forgot about it once I felt better. Aerobics is like therapy for me, “meditation in motion.” But this only takes about 30 minutes. So this time, as long as I am allowed, I will insist on 30 minutes a day for at least a month, otherwise the symptoms will be completely Gone.
