Video storage
Keeping pictures of intruders or criminals (or similar problems) can be important. Even the cheapest doorbells often come with a subscription option to store video in the cloud (usually a few dollars a month). Some have local savings options, so if you want to make an ongoing payment, study carefully.
AI awareness
Object recognition using AI features is key to a video doorbell, allowing the device to detect packages, people, animals and vehicles and send you only the information that is needed. In our experience, doorbells often pick up runners and people walking their pets, but good awareness avoids traffic and animal alerts, to reduce anxiety. Some companies store product identification behind registrations, while others include it for free.
Smart home integration
If you already have a security or voice assistant you like, such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, always look for a doorbell that works with your choice. Amazon brands tend to limit the doorbells to Alexa only. Compatibility of Apple Siri and Apple Home is very difficult to find now, especially in budget options.
Wired versus wireless
These types of batteries are easy to install, but sometimes (not always) they cost a lot of money. Wire ropes are often the best way to save. We found both options at reasonable prices.
Sound quality
If you like to talk from your door, look for one that has two-way audio, preferably with noise canceling or something similar. We test the sound quality of every doorbell we review to make sure you can have a conversation.
Looks and ideas
Video doorbells don’t need a wide frame, but they are great to have if they face a large front yard. Also, the higher resolution makes it easier to see faces and other important details, so it’s better to get a model that has HD.
