The West Ham striker underwent surgery

West Ham striker Michail Antonio underwent surgery for a broken lower limb following a car accident on Saturday.

The Jamaica international was involved in an accident in Essex and had to be cut from his vehicle.

A statement from West Ham said: “West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio has undergone surgery for a fractured lower limb following a car accident on Saturday afternoon (December 7, 2024).

“Michail will continue to be monitored in the hospital in the coming days.”

There was an outpouring of support for the 34-year-old after the news broke with West Ham expressing their gratitude, as well as their appreciation for the emergency services.

The statement added: “Everyone at the club wishes Michail a speedy recovery and would like to express their sincere gratitude to the football family as a whole for the tremendous support they have shown since yesterday’s news, as well as a heartfelt thank you to the emergency services and first responders who attended to Michael immediately. after the incident and the medical team that continues to help him in his recovery.

“The club will provide further updates when necessary.”

Reports this morning suggest that Antonio has suffered a serious broken leg which could see him retire.
