‘The same people are always responsible’

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero openly criticized the club’s management for not investing enough after the 4-3 defeat by Chelsea.

The defeat marked another setback in a challenging spell for Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs, who have managed just one win in their last seven matches in all competitions.

Speaking to Telemundo Deportes after the game, Romero expressed concern that the club is lagging behind its Premier League rivals due to a lack of financial commitments.

The Argentinian international suggested that other top clubs constantly invest in order to remain competitive.

He said: “Manchester City competes every year, you see Liverpool strengthen their team, Chelsea strengthen their team, they’re not doing well, they’re stepping up again, and now they’re seeing results.

“These are things that should be imitated. “You have to realize that something is wrong, hopefully they (the board) realize that.

“For the last few years, it’s always been the same – first the players change, then the coaching staff, and the same people are always responsible.

“Let’s hope they figure out who’s really responsible and move forward because it’s a wonderful club that, with the structure they have, could easily compete for the title every year.”

The Australian coach is the fifth coach Romero has worked with since joining Spurs in 2021, including interim appointments.

Sunday’s defeat to their London rivals left Spurs bottom of the league table, in 11th place after 15 games.

The current struggles in the team have intensified the supervision of the club’s leadership – which we analyzed in a separate section – with Romero pointing the finger at the scoreboard rather than head coach Ange Postecoglou.

Romero’s remarks came during a live interview with Spanish broadcaster Telemundo Deportes, where he was quizzed about Tottenham’s squad.
